If you’re planning a trip to Phuket, two west coast beaches that often come up are: Patong Beach vs Kamala Beach.
Both are conveniently located and offer easy access to Phuket’s attractions, but they deliver very different atmospheres and travel experiences.
I’ve visited both several times, and each caters to a distinct type of traveler. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which one is the better base for your holiday.
Patong is Phuket’s busiest and most famous beach, known for its vibrant nightlife, endless entertainment, and international vibe.
The beach itself is long and lively, with jet skis, parasailing, and plenty of beach chairs for hire.
But the real action is just behind the sand: Bangla Road and its surrounding streets are filled with nightclubs, bars, live music venues, and restaurants serving everything from Thai classics to international comfort food.
Keep in mind that Bangla Road also offers adult entertainment, although it’s not similar to Pattaya.
But still, it’s not really a family-friendly destination.
Patong is ideal if you want to be at the center of Phuket’s energy, though.
It’s also home to the largest shopping malls on the island, such as Jungceylon, making it easy to mix beach time with retail therapy.
On the downside, it’s crowded, noisy, and can feel overwhelming if you’re after a more peaceful beach holiday.
Expect Patong being one of the most overly touristy parts of the island, and Phuket in general, is quite touristy.
It also comes with a lot of conveniences, and reaching other parts of the island, or for island hopping, Patong won’t dissapoint.
But it’s really designed for the hedonistic traveler, and if you’re not into partying, it doesn’t make much sense to stay here.
Just a 15-minute drive north of Patong, Kamala Beach offers a much more relaxed alternative.
The beach is wide, clean, and far less crowded, with calm waters in the high season that make it excellent for swimming.
The village behind the beach retains a slower pace, with small restaurants, local markets, and boutique hotels rather than mega resorts and malls.
Kamala is popular with families and travelers who want peace without being completely isolated.
The beach also has a small nightlife scene, but it’s far more subdued than Patong: think beach bars and chilled-out live music rather than neon clubs.
The area is also home to the famous Phuket FantaSea cultural theme park, which appeals to families with kids.

Choose Kamala Beach if…
In short: Patong suits travelers who thrive on excitement and nightlife, while Kamala is perfect for those who want a calm, family-friendly escape.
Both are easily connected, so if you stay in one, you can always visit the other for a change of pace.
