Mai Khao Beach vs Nai Yang Beach - What Is The Best Choice?

If you’re looking for a quieter stay in Phuket, two names often come up: Mai Khao Beach vs Nai Yang Beach.

Both are located in the north of the island, close to the airport, and far away from the hustle and bustle of Patong, Karon, or Kata.

They share a peaceful, untouched vibe, but they still offer very different experiences.

I’ve spent time in both, and here’s my take on how they compare.

Mai Khao Beach: Secluded Escape by the Sea

Mai Khao Beach is the longest beach in Phuket, stretching over 10 kilometers, and it feels almost completely untouched.

When you walk here, you’ll often find yourself with long stretches of sand all to yourself, which is rare on an island as popular as Phuket.

There are very few restaurants and bars directly on the beach, giving it a natural and tranquil atmosphere.

Accommodation here leans more towards luxury resorts, many of which are set back in private spaces with direct beach access.

This makes Mai Khao ideal for those who want privacy, a quiet base, and comfort.

One of the unique highlights is spotting planes flying low as they land at the nearby Phuket International Airport, a quirky photo opportunity that many visitors love.

That said, if you’re looking for nightlife, shopping, or even a wide selection of dining options, Mai Khao is not the place.

You’ll likely spend your evenings in your resort or need to drive out for more variety.

During our stay, we opted for a rental car.

If you’re comfortable driving around the island, Mai Khao Beach is one of the magic places in Phuket that is not overwhelmed by mass tourism.

That also brings to the biggest draw of this part of the island: it’s almost mandatory to rent a car (or motorbike) to easily explore the island.

Solely depending on taxis and Ubers is far from ideal.

If you want something luxury and comfortable, but not rent a car or motorbike, you might want to look for another part of Phuket.

Not the north of the island which Mai Khao and Nai Yang are part of.

Nai Yang Beach: Local Charm and Relaxed Vibes

Nai Yang Beach, just south of Mai Khao, is a more balanced option.

It’s still quiet compared to Phuket’s southern beaches, but it has more of a local feel than Mai Khao.

The southern part of the beach, near Sirinat National Park, has a handful of budget guesthouses, boutique hotels, and beachfront restaurants where you can enjoy a meal with your feet in the sand.

The atmosphere here is relaxed and welcoming, with a mix of locals and travelers.

You’ll see families enjoying picnics, fishermen at work, and kids playing along the shore.

It’s a great choice if you want to stay somewhere calm but still have easy access to small-scale amenities like bars, massage shops, and affordable restaurants.

Another advantage is the national park itself, which is perfect for nature walks, birdwatching, or just enjoying the unspoiled environment.

And with the airport just minutes away, Nai Yang is also very convenient for short stays or early flights.

Similar to Mai Khao, you do need to rent a car or motorbike to properly explore the island, in my opinion.

But here is my take: when you’re staying in Phuket for a longer period of time, don’t stay only at one place.

For example, spend a few days around Kata Beach and explore the highlights of the island.

Then, when you want to explore Surin Island, Phang Nga Bay and enjoy peaceful beaches, stay at either Nai Yang Beach or Mai Khao Beach.

So... Mai Khao Beach or Nai Yang Beach?

Stay in Mai Khao Beach if you want:

  • A long, untouched beach where you’ll often be completely alone.

  • Luxury resorts with private, tranquil settings.

  • A remote and peaceful escape from Phuket’s tourist hotspots.

  • Unique plane-spotting opportunities at the northern end of the beach.

  • A “do nothing” holiday focused on relaxation and privacy.

Stay in Nai Yang Beach if you want:

  • A relaxed vibe with more of a local, authentic atmosphere.

  • Budget to mid-range accommodation options mixed with boutique stays.

  • A handful of beachfront restaurants and bars within walking distance.

  • Access to Sirinat National Park for a nature-focused experience.

  • A convenient location just minutes from Phuket Airport.

In short: choose Mai Khao if you’re after seclusion and luxury, and pick Nai Yang if you prefer a laid-back beach with local charm and more affordable options.

Both Mai Khao and Nai Yang are far from the action and are best suited for those seeking peace and quiet.

But they cater to different types of travelers.
