The main departure points for Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi tours are all nearby: Rassada Pier for Phi Phi, and several smaller piers for Phang Nga and beyond.
Staying in town means shorter transfer times to the boats, which is a big deal if you’ve got kids or simply don’t want to wake up at 5 a.m.
What I personally love about Phuket Town is that it offers a completely different vibe from the beaches.
The Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful murals, and endless cafés make it feel like a destination in itself.
After a day on the water, you can wander through the Sunday Walking Street Market or grab dinner in a trendy fusion restaurant, a refreshing change from the tourist-heavy beach scene.
What I would do is first explore Phuket’s highlights while staying on the westside of the island. Then, stay in Phuket Town for a few days to combine island-hopping with exploring the cool place that’s named Phuket Town.

Yes, the transfers can take a while depending on traffic, but if nightlife is part of your holiday, this trade-off is worth it.
Spend your days out at Phi Phi or James Bond Island, then come back to neon lights, beach parties, and late-night eats.
The other advantage of Patong is choice.
Every tour company has desks here, so you can shop around for island trips without booking in advance.
You’ll find everything from cheap group tours to private speedboats.
So, why stay here?
Because you don’t want to choose between nightlife and island hopping: you want both.
This one is for travelers who don’t care much about the beaches of Phuket itself and want to focus on Phang Nga Bay and the northern islands.
Bang Rong and Ao Por are less-developed areas on the northeast coast of Phuket, close to the piers where many James Bond and Hong Island tours depart.
It’s quiet here: you’ll be surrounded by mangroves, local fishing villages, and a handful of boutique resorts.
It’s the opposite of Patong: peaceful, rural, and authentic.
From here, you can hop straight onto a long-tail boat or join a sea canoeing trip without the chaos of tourist crowds.
The downside? You’re far from Phuket’s main beaches and nightlife.
But if your idea of a perfect trip is kayaking through limestone caves and relaxing in nature afterward, this area ticks all the boxes.
So, why stay here?
Because you want to escape the crowds and be as close as possible to Phang Nga Bay adventures.

It all depends on what kind of trip you’re planning:
No matter where you stay, the beauty of Phuket is that island hopping is always possible.

If island hopping is your top priority, I’d personally go with Chalong or Phuket Town.
